A Closer Look: Go Out as a Group, Go Home as a Group

* * *

Sticking to the go out as a group, go home as a group rule and picking a designated mom are solid ways to be safe during an evening out. In any social setting, where there are people you don’t know and alcohol is being consumed, it pays to be aware and alert. However, when you are with a group, it can be challenging to make sure everyone stays together, especially when drinking is involved.

What if you’re with the group, everyone around you is getting sloppy drunk, and you just want to go home?

You go home. A toxic environment will probably become rowdier and more dangerous for you as the night goes on. At the start of the evening, figure out in advance a couple of ways to get home in case your original plan falls through. Keep in mind that if you have been drinking, your decision making will likely be diminished, so having an alternative arrangement is a positive, proactive move.

Whenever you go out, always do the following:

• Bring cash.

• Have your identification.

• Bring your cell phone.

• Call a cab, Uber, or Lyft rather than hailing one on the street.

• Beware of the fake-taxi scam, where a woman is picked up after hailing what she believes is a real taxi and is then robbed or worse.

• If you’re traveling, take a hotel business card or snap a photo with your cell phone.

After a fun night out, you and your friends agree to meet by the front door and leave in fifteen minutes. You get there a little later—bathroom line—and realize they’ve left without you. What do you do?

This can easily happen, especially at a large party or in a loud club. You miscommunicate, lose each other, or get stuck waiting for the bathroom. As in the case above, having a backup plan in place to get home or to your dorm or anywhere safe before you go out is always a smart idea. And again, carry cash, your cell phone, and a photo ID at all times.

You are the designated mom for the night, the group is ready to leave, and one of your friends wants to stay behind and talk to a guy she met. What should you do?

While you know it’s best to stick with the original plan and go home as a group, you’ll frequently have situations where someone wants to break away. If she has her wits about her and is not in a condition that would compromise her safety, you may have no choice. You’ll only frustrate the both of you if you insist that she go home. If she’s in no condition to make good decisions, you may have to take matters into your own hands and be convincingly persistent. A decent guy may try to help persuade her to go with you. If he happens not to be so decent, it’s even more important to remove her.
